LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lipscomb baseball team took the series opener against Liberty in a 9-1 victory Friday night.
The Bisons (27-21, 11-8 ASUN) displayed a dominant performance both at the plate and on the mound to top the Flames (33-16, 12-7 ASUN).
Lipscomb fell behind in the bottom of the first, 1-0, after a triple and RBI groundout by Liberty, but that was all the action the Flames offense would produce. Senior starter Chris Kachmar, who is the reigning ASUN Pitcher of the Week, followed up his complete game shutout last weekend with another complete game.
Kachmar settled in after the first and kept the Flames’ bats quiet for the remainder of the game. The right-hander allowed just six hits, with six strikeouts and one earned run to earn his eighth win of the season.
With Kachmar dealing on the mound, it was up to the offense to provide the run support and the offense came through.
The Purple and Gold took the lead in the top of the third on a two-run bomb by Tevin Symonette to go up 2-1. Lipscomb then pushed its lead to 4-1 in the fifth with a solo home run by Brian Moore and a RBI double from Symonette after Haddon Adams walked.
The Bisons had their biggest inning of the night in the top of the sixth when they plated three runs on three hits and a Liberty error. With runners on the corners and two outs, Lipscomb successfully pulled off a double steal as Moore crossed the plate on the attempt to throw out Adams at second. Cade Sorrells followed with a RBI single and advanced to second on a fielding error and then Zeke Dodson roped a ground-rule double to score Sorrells making it 7-1.
Lipscomb scored two more runs in the top of the ninth off a throwing error by Liberty after loading the bases to make it 9-1 and Kachmar secured the victory.
AROUND THE HORN:
- Symonette’s home run was his seventh of the season. He has hit five home runs over his last seven conference games.
