NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb baseball team was able to pick up its first sweep of the season as it held on to beat Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon, 5-2.
Lipscomb was once again able to get out to a fast start and grab the lead early in the game. John Shields and Chris Bashlor teamed up to record a pair of sacrifice flies giving the Bisons a 2-0 advantage after the first inning.
Junior Dylan Bierman made his season debut on the mound for the Purple and Gold and was able to shutout the Falcons in the first three innings, while recording six strikeouts.
It was in the fourth inning when the Falcons were finally able to get to Bierman and knocked in their first run on a solo home run. Lipscomb responded in the home half of the inning, however, when Brian Moore knocked a single through the left side, which scored Knox Preston.
Bowling Green was able to get that run right back in the top of the fifth after two consecutive walks and a RBI single up the middle cut the Bisons lead back to one run at 3-2.
Lipscomb looked poised for a big inning in the bottom of the seventh as Moore started it off with a triple, but on the following at bat Haddon Adams sent a hard hit groundball back to the shortstop, with the infield playing in, and Moore was cut-down trying to score. The Bisons were unable to do anything after that and posted a zero on the scoreboard for the third consecutive inning.
The big hit Lipscomb needed came in the eighth. After Shields reached on a single, Malik Williams stepped up and took a fastball left out over the center of the plate deep for a two-run homer making it a 5-2 ballgame and giving the Bisons some much needed breathing room.
Sophomore Tyler Guilfoil then closed it out on the mound, securing the season opening sweep for the Bisons.
“Anytime you finish up a sweep it’s a good weekend,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. “I just told the guys I thought we really executed the things we preach to them everyday. We got some things accomplished on offense and defense that we talk about each day in practice and we were able to execute them.
“Wins don’t come easy, so the opportunity we had today to finish out the sweep it was good to see. Because sometimes you can have a little let down after winning two games, but I think they had the right mindset and were able to finish it up."
