NASHVILLE - The Lipscomb baseball team picked up a series win over the Ohio State Buckeyes as it won the final game of the weekend series, 4-2, on Sunday.
The Bisons and Buckeyes ended the weekend with a low-scoring, pitchers duel. Lipscomb starter, Dylan Bierman, and Ohio State starter, Griffan Smith, both gave their clubs quality outings.
Lipscomb was able to strike in the first inning, but the scoreboard at Dugan Field was lit up with plenty of zeroes after that. Haddon Adams got it started for the Bisons with a single to right center and took second on a passed ball. A single by Chris Bashlor moved Adams to third, where he eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Maddux Houghton to put the Bisons up 1-0.
The next three innings would go scoreless as Bierman and Smith settled in on the mound. During that stretch only two hits were allowed, one by Lipscomb and one by OSU.
Bierman’s only mistake on the afternoon came in the top of the fifth inning. A Nick Erwin two-run home run over the left field put the Buckeyes on top 2-1. Bierman regained control, however, and he shut down OSU for the remainder of the inning as well as in the sixth. Bierman finished the day throwing 6.0 innings while allowing six hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.
The Buckeyes pulled Smith after he went 6.0 innings and surrendered six hits and one earned run and handed the ball to Will Pfennig in the seventh, which is where the Purple and Gold retook the lead.
Ty Jones led off with a double to the gap in in right center and Chaz Bertolani followed with a perfectly placed bunt-single to put runners on the corners. Brian Moore then laid down a safety-squeeze to score Jones, as the throw to the plate was late and Bertolani advanced to third on the throw, putting runners on the corners again. Adams brought in Bertolani in the next at-bat with a sacrifice fly, which made it 3-2 Lipscomb.
The Bisons then added an important insurance run in the eighth. Malik Williams singled and advanced to third via a passed ball and wild pitch. Williams came home to score two batters later, as he beat a throw to the plate while Von Watson was caught in a rundown.
Tyler Guilfoil sealed it by recording a six-out save and giving the Bisons a 4-2 win.
“Ohio State is a good team and with their pitching staff they’re going to matchup with anybody they play,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. “All of this just gets us prepared for some tough ASUN Conference play. I was excited to see that the things we worked on in practice paid off for us in this game.”
