Stephens named official mortgage lender of LU athletics
Wayne Stephens has signed on as a three-year sponsor for the Lipscomb Athletics program.

Stephens, a mortgage originator for F&M Mortgage in Brentwood, points to his many connections to both the school and athletics program as his motivation for the financial commitment. F&M Mortgage is the “official mortgage lender” for Lipscomb Athletics as part of the sponsorship.

“I’ve been around Lipscomb all my life it seems’” Stephens said. I grew up in a small town in Southern Ohio. I came to Lipscomb in the fall of 1971. It has been a great school. Our two children attended Lipscomb and received good educations. Who knows, our grandchildren may go here as well. One never knows.”

Stephens attended Lipscomb University from 1971 through 1973. He married Karen Callicoat his high school sweetheart, in 1973. They moved to Portsmouth, Ohio. They moved back to Nashville in June of 1975.

His son Jeremy attended Lipscomb from the first grade through college, graduating in 1999. Aaron attended from the first grade through high school and then attended Auburn University.

They have four grandchildren with another arriving any day.

The Stephens family became involved in athletics in the late 1970s and early ‘80s during the Dom Meyer basketball coaching era. Stephens also remembers players like Ted Jamison and Bo McLaughlin performing on the baseball field.

They attend Brentwood Hills Church of Christ where they are associated with a number of Lipscomb faculty and staff members. He counts Lipscomb athletic director Philip Hutcheson and Brent High, assistant athletic director for external affairs, as good friends.

Stephens vividly recalls the full houses at McQuiddy Gym whenever Belmont or Trevecca Nazarene played during those years.

“You had to be at the gym before the girl’s game started to get in.” Stephens said. “Everyone tried to figure out a way to get in.

“We would take the kids and they would play during the game. There was a play center on the upper deck. We could watch the game and watch the kids. They would play and have a great time.”

Jeremy and Aaron both attended basketball and tennis camps at Lipscomb. Jeremy played tennis and Aaron played basketbal

“The campus in general has changed so much” Stephens said. “There is a new baseball field and a new softball field. There are new tennis courts on top of the parking garage. There is a new basketball arena and the beautiful soccer field, plus a lot of other new facilities.

“It is exciting to just be around the campus. Our kids were given great opportunities there.”

Stephens is the person to see if someone wants to build, buy or refinance a house. He has been in the mortgage business since 1993.

“I work for F&M Bank out of Clarksville, one of the top rated small banks in the state of Tennessee and in the country. “We opened this office in Brentwood a year ago in July. It has been very exciting and great to be here in the Brentwood area.”
