The Lipscomb Bisons closed out the regular season with an 87-79 victory Thursday night against Troy at Allen Arena to clinch a post in the Atlantic Sun Conferenec Tournament. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Bisons, the first time they have won that many consecutive A-Sun games in their two seasons in the conference.
"We just hoped we were going to be in the mix coming down the stretch," said Lipscomb Coach Scott Sanderson. "We were hoping those four games were going to mean something. We had a great run."
In the first half the Bisons combined a perfect 11-for-11 free throw shooting with seven 3-point shots to take a 42-37 lead at intermission.
"We scored most of our points in transition in the first half, and we kind of got loose in the second half too," Sanderson said.
The Bisons jumped out to a six-point lead at 19:25 on a 3-pointer by James Poindexter.
Troy took over the lead at15:30 on a lay-up by Bobby Dixon that made the score 51-50. The Bisons came back with another 3-pointer by Poindexter to take a 53-51 lead.
At 11:10 Troy took over the lead again at 56-53 on a 3-point shot from Eddie Baker. Troy would keep the advantage until the7:14 mark when Poindexter again found the range from 3-point land for a 63-61 advantage. The next time down court he would hit another 3-pointer to move the Bisons ahead 66-61 at 6:24 . From 7:30 to 6:24 Poindexter would hit three 3-pointers.
"He shot some of the balls very deep by the hash marks out there," Sanderson said. "They were very, very deep. He raised up and made some big shots. He has been a clutch player in the last month of the season."
Corey Hornsby caught fire for Troy hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to take a 67-66 lead at5:29 . It would be Troy 's last lead of the game.
In the final 5:12 of the game Poindexter would hit six-of-six free throws. The Bisons were on target on 29-of-37 times at the line. During that same time frame the Bisons attempted 16 free throws and hit 15.
Poindexter finished with the game-high in scoring with 26 points, 23 of them in the second half. Brian Fisk scored 19 points and also had five rebounds, six assists and two steals. Eddie Ard pitched in with 10. On the boards for the Bisons Cameron Robinson was the game-leader with 11,
Troy placed three players in double figures. Baker scored 25 followed by Hornsby with 23 and Bobby Dixon with 18.
The Bisons finished the regular season with a 16-11 record, 11-9 in the A-Sun. Troy slips to 12-16, 10-9 in the A-Sun with one game left Saturday at Belmont .
"We can finish anywhere from third to fifth based on what might happen," Sanderson said. "I'm glad we played tonight instead of Saturday."
The players made a curtain call to say thank you to the fans at Allen Arena.
"This league is so balanced," Sanderson. "There is a lot basketball to be played in this league."
The Bisons also celebrated "Senior Night" honoring Corey King and matt Jarboe. Also be honored was senior cheerleader Rachel Gallaher.
