Lipscomb held the McNeese State Cowboys to five field goals in the first half and only 14 point for a 65-47 victory, their second in a row.
"I liked our defense in the first half. I thought we were very good," said head coach Scott Sanderson. "I thought for this early in the year for that twenty minutes we were very good."
The Bisons held the Cowboys to 31% shooting in the first half. McNeese State went 0-5 from the three point line during the first twenty minutes.
McNeese State jumped out to a 2 point lead with a shot by Jarvis Bradley at the 18:33 mark of the first half. It would prove to be their only lead of the game.
Freshman Brandon Brown drained two 3 pointers to give the Bisons a 6-2 lead. Brown finished with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Lipscomb would not look back in the first half as they cruised to a 31-14 lead at the intermission.
Lipscomb forced McNeese State into committing 17 turnovers in the first half. The Bisons only had seven turnovers in the first half.
Although the scoreboard may not have shown it, the second half was a different story for the Bisons as far as defense was concerned.
"I was very displeased with our second half," said Sanderson. "We gave up 14 in the first half and 33 the second half. That's just a lack of focus, and that's why I kept trying to push our guys."
The Cowboys did improve their shooting to 48 percent in the second half and 41 perecent overall for the game. They also only committed six turnovers in the second half.
"We want to be a good team," said Sanderson. "We want to guard 40 minutes. We guarded 20 tonight."
However, great three point shooting helped the Bisons keep a double digit lead throughout the second half. Lipscomb drained five threes and shot 45% from behind the three-point line.
Lipscomb is 3-5. McNeese State fell to 2-3.
The Bisons next action comes on Monday night at 7 CT. They will be hosting Arkansas Tech. Coverage of this game can be heard on the Lipscomb Sports Network. It can also be seen on Atlantic Sun Television.
