In the last of three games in the state of Louisiana, the Bisons fought back to hold off the Cowboys from McNeese State 69-65. Lipscomb will now take some time off for the holidays before heading to West Virginia to take on Marshall. The Bisons improve to 5-8, and the Cowboys fall to 5-5.
"I told the guys they can take all my gifts back. I'll just take that win," said head coach Scott Sanderson. "That was a big win against a quality team. I was just proud of our guys. It was a good character win."
The first half went back and fourth for both teams, but the cowboys managed to go on a 9-2 run to end the half. McNeese State shot 54 percent from the field and went to the locker room with a 7 point lead over the Bisons.
Lipscomb's leading scorer Eddie Ard only had four points in the first half. As a team, the Bisons shot 36 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free throw line.
The second half brought new life to the Bisons. Josh Slater left the game early in the second half after being hit in the face. However, he quickly returned to action and managed to score 15 points. He also had 4 steals and 2 assists.
"He's just a tough kid that will compete at a high level. We needed every basket and every stop he gave us," said Sanderson.
Lipscomb went on a 14-4 run halfway through the second half. Ard and Slater both led the charge in this 10 point turn around. Ard finished with a season high 22 points. He went 11-11 from the free throw line. His 18 point second half is the best Christmas present the Bisons could have asked for.
"We need him (Ard) to play. We've got a lot of guys that are doing some things for us, but we need him to play for us on both ends of the floor. He made some big free throws and made some of those old "Eddie Ard" shots he used to make for us. I was glad to see some of those go down," said Sanderson.
John Pichon and Jarvis Bradley both led the Cowboys with 12 points a piece. Ard led the Bisons with 22 points. He also had 4 steals and 3 assists. Brandon Brown had 8 points and 5 rebounds. LaKory Daniels contributed with 9 points.
With this victory, the Bisons get their second road victory and improve to 5-8 on the year. The Cowboys drop to 5-5.
The next action for Lipscomb comes on December 29 when they face Marshall. Coverage of this game can be heard on the Lipscomb Sports Network (1200 AM).
