Hodzic scores 30 as Bisons fall 85-82 in OT to ETSU

Saturday, January 17, 2009

JOHNSON CITY, TENN – After struggling in the first half over the last few games, the Lipscomb University Bisons jumped out of the boxes at East Tennessee State Saturday for a 15 point lead at halftime.

But the Bisons couldn’t maintain control of the game in the second half and allowed ETSU to come back and eventually win 85-82 in overtime.

Lipscomb turned the ball over 27 times including 12 in the second half.  ETSU only forced ten steals on the turnovers.

ETSU spent a large portion of the game at the free throw line.  The Buccaneers were 23-of-28 from the free throw line during regulation.  They were three-of-eight in overtime to finish at 26-of-36.

ETSU’s Kevin Tiggs, who scored a team-high 27, made more free throws than the whole Lipscomb squad.  Tiggs was 11-of-16.  Lipscomb was 10-of-16 from the charity stripe.  The Bisons were five-of-eight in regulation.

Lipscomb was whistled for 25 fouls.  ETSU was called for 18.

Sophomore Adnan Hodzic scored a career-high 30 points in the loss.  He was 14-of-16 from the field.  He’s now shooting 60.6 percent from the field on the season.

Lipscomb held a 17 point lead-their largest of the game-with 50 seconds remaining in the first half before turning the ball over their final three possessions of the half.

The Bisons opened the second half with a turnover by Hodzic, but sophomore Jimmy Oden stole the ball back and redshirt freshman Brian Wright gave Lipscomb another 17 point lead with a layup.

Down 17 with 17:29 remaining, ETSU went on a 19-4 run over 7:39 to close Lipscomb’s lead to one.  During the stretch ETSU scored five layups, hit their first three of the game, and converted on six free throws.

ETSU tied the game at 58 with 8:56 remaining on two free throws by Tiggs. The Buccaneers took their first lead with 7:10 left on two free throws by Courtney Pigram.

ETSU took their largest lead of regulation when Courtney Pigram nailed a jumper with 6:11 left to put ETSU up 66-62.

Hodzic scored the next five points to give the Bisons a one point lead 67-66 with just under five minutes remaining.  Lipscomb took a three point lead when Michael Teller connected on a 3-pointer with 3:43 remaining.

ETSU scored on the next two possessions to go up 71-70 with 2:38 left.  Neither team scored until Hodzic scored a layup with 15 seconds on the clock.

Oden had an opportunity to put the Bisons up three with six ticks left but missed the second of two free throws

Mike Smith rebounded the ball and dished to Courtney Pigram who drove coast-to-coast for a layup to tie the game at 73 with 0.7 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

Lipscomb went ahead 77-73 after Lusk connected on two free throws and Hodzic scored in the paint on the first two possessions of overtime.

ETSU called their last timeout and responded with a 9-0 run to go up 82-77.  The Bisons didn’t score for 3:20 until Josh Slater nailed a jumper with 1:07 left.

Down 85-81 with 35 seconds left, Oden nailed two free throws to bring the Bisons within three, 85-82.

ETSU missed two free throws on each of their next two possessions, but Lipscomb also wasn’t able to close the gap.

Teller went to the line with 2.7 remaining for two free throws.  After missing the first Teller intentionally missed the second to give the Bisons an opportunity at an offensive rebound.  Wright tipped the ball to Lusk on the left wing, but his 3-point attempt to force a second overtime rimmed out as time expired.

Slater was the only other Bison to finish with double-figures with 15.  Wright and Teller each had nine.  Pigram had 26 for ETSU.  Adam Sollazzo added 12 and Mike Smith had 10.

Lipscomb held a 38-37 rebounding advantage.  Hodzic grabbed a team-high eight boards.  Sollazzo led ETSU with eight.

Lipscomb was credited with 17 assists on their 32 baskets.  Teller and Slater had five each.  Oden had four.

The Bisons were 32-of-59 from the field for 54.2 percent.  ETSU was 28-of-67 for 41.8 percent.  Lipscomb was 8-of-19 for 42.1 percent from the 3-point line.  ETSU was 3-of-16 for 18.8 percent.
