BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Only hours after being named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week for posting career outings against Belmont and ETSU, Lipscomb junior guard Josh Slater continued the heroics draining a three in the right corner with 0.2 seconds left to give the Bisons a 60-59 road win against Campbell.
With the Bisons (12-10, 9-4 A-Sun) down by five with just over six minutes left, Slater took control of the game scoring 12 of Lipscomb’s final 14 points. He finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocks.
After junior forward Michael Teller opened the contest with a layup for the Bisons, Campbell (12-9, 7-5 A-Sun) controlled the game until the closing minutes. Lipscomb retook a two-point lead on a jumper by Slater with 2:23 left.
Campbell built a 16-8 lead halfway through the first period when the Bisons went cold for over six minutes missing nine attempts from the field and turning the ball over five times.
Lipscomb would go on a 7-0 run with two free throws by center Adnan Hodzic, a jumper by Slater, and a 3-pointer by Jordan Burgason.
The Bisons would tie it twice before Slater drained a three with 4:02 in the half to give Lipscomb the 25-24 advantage.
Lorne Merthie hit a fadeaway jumper as time expired in the opening half to give Campbell the 35-29 going into the locker room.
Lipscomb closed it to a one-point ballgame, 35-34, and held Campbell scoreless in the second half until Kyle Vejraska had a fastbreak dunk off a Lipscomb miss at the 16:13 mark.
Holding the 38-36 lead Campbell embarked on a 7-0 run capped by a three by Merthie with 12:52 left to give the Camels their largest lead of the night.
Burgason countered on the next possession with his own three and Hodzic and Justin Glenn made layups to bring it back to a two-point contest.
Campbell held a small, but steady lead until Slater brought the Bisons within one, 51-50, with 5:40 left.
Slater tied the game at 53 when he made the front end of a pair of free throws with 4:22 remaining. He missed the second.
After being fouled on the next possession Campbell’s Jonathan Rodriguez made both of his free throws to give the Camels a two-point lead.
Rodriguez led Campbell with 15 points and 14 rebounds. He became the 101st player in NCAA Division I history to reach 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
Hodzic quickly tied it back up on a reverse layup from freshman point guard Zach Brown. Slater’s jumper with 2:23 left gave Lipscomb the 57-55 lead.
William Kossangue made a running jumper to tie the game at 57 with 47.3 ticks left.
Hodzic missed a layup to tie and Rodriguez pulled the defensive rebound. After being fouled by Brian Wright, he connected on both free throws with 11 seconds left to give Campbell the 59-57 lead.
The Bisons imbounded the ball to Wright who passed off to Slater with about 8 seconds left. Slater drove up the right side of the court into the right corner in front of the Lipscomb bench where he released a fadeaway three that swished in with 0.2 seconds left.
After a timeout Campbell attempted to throw the ball down the court for a tip-in, but the Bisons swatted away the pass for the victory.
Hodzic posted his third consecutive double-double finishing with team-highs of 24 points and 11 rebounds. He was 10-of-18 from the floor. He extended his streak of scoring in double-figures to 49 games.
