Senior center Adnan Hodzic, the 2009-2010 A-Sun Player of the Year, has been selected to repeat that performance this season. Hodzic and senior guard Josh Slater were unanimous selections to the preseason all-conference team. They were two of three players to earn the unanimous approval of the coaches.
In the coaches poll the Bisons received six first place votes followed by ETSU with four and Belmont with one. In the media poll the Bisons received 23 first place votes followed by ETSU with nine and Belmont with one.
“I don’t worry a whole lot about it,” Bisons’ coach Scott Sanderson said. “Whether it is the coaches or the media it is just opinions.
“Championships are won on the floor where they should be. Being picked No. 1 in a preseason poll means we have a lot of good players coming back, which we do.”
The Bisons have won A-Sun regular season titles in 2006 and 2010. Last season the Bisons were 17-13 overall, 14-6 in the conference.
However, they have never won the A-Sun Tournament, something Sanderson has discussed once with his team.
“We addressed it the first day we were together this fall,” Sanderson said. “We know that stuff is there, but there is no reason to keep bringing it up.
“This team knows the expectations that have been placed on it. We are not going to complete everything we want to do this season unless we win the tournament and go to the NCAA Tournament. There is no reason to put any extra pressure on our players by mentioning it again.”
Sanderson credits the hard work of Hodzic and Slater and his coaching staff for the way the two players have improved each season.
“Our coaches do a great job of player development,” Sanderson said. “Adnan is one of the better players for sure and he has worked hard in the offseason to be even better.
“Adnan and Josh have both been major parts of our program. They both know how to handle success. Some players don’t understand how to do that. They have earned individual accolades, but they both know they can’t play as well as they do without their teammates.”
The Bisons first official practice is Friday night at 6:30 at the University of the South-Sewanee.
