Bisons renew rivalry with Austin Peay after 48 years

The Lipscomb University Bisons revive a rivalry with Austin Peay State University for the first time in 48 years as the teams meet in Allen Arena Thursday night at 7:15 p.m. central time.

Lipscomb and APSU last met in McQuiddy Gymnasium on Feb. 1, 1962.  The Governors defeated the Bisons 93-87.  Prior to tonight’s game, the 1960-61 Bisons basketball team will be honored. This team defeated Austin Peay to capture the 1961 Volunteer State Athletic Conference championship.

The Bisons opened their 2010-11 home campaign Monday with a 103-78 win over the Stillman College Tigers.  Freshman point guard Robert Boyd led Lipscomb with 20 points including 10-for-10 shooting from the free throw line.  Five Bisons finished in double-figures.  Senior guard Josh Slater scored 18 points and had 10  rebounds for his 11th career double-double.  Lipscomb coach Scott Sanderson played 12 of his 13 players 10 or more minutes.

Austin Peay has opened its season with two close road victories.  Friday at St. Louis, junior Tyshwan Edmondson hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds and Monday senior Caleb Brown hit a deep three-pointer with 0.2 seconds left to give the Govs the 70-67 victory.  Junior Josh Terry leads APSU in scoring at 17.5 points per game and Edmondson follows at 15.5 points per game.

Lipscomb and Austin Peay have met 66 times previously with the Govs leading the series 40-26. Lipscomb and Austin Peay meet in Clarksville on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.
