The Game
The Lipscomb Bisons open the 2011-12 season against Division II Fort Valley State of the Southern Intercollegiate League (SIAC) Friday at 7:15 p.m. in Allen Arena.

Lipscomb is 9-1 in home openers in Allen Arena but the Bisons have lost three of their last four season openers. This is the first meeting between the schools.  Lipscomb is 11-0 in Allen Arena in regular season games against non-Division I teams.

Last week the Bisons defeated Freed-Hardeman 97-69 in their sole exhibition  game.  Jordan Burgason scored 19 points and hit five treys.  Freshman Malcolm Smith had 14 points and eight rebounds while senior Justin Glenn had 13 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Roster Review

Bisons coach Scott Sanderson returns four players from last year’s squad that went 17-13.  Burgason averaged 10.8 points last year shooting 41.8 percent from beyond the arc.  Guard Robert Boyd averaged 5.4 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists as a freshman.  Senior Justin Glenn scored 2.4 points and had 2.6 rebounds in 10.9 minutes of action per game.  Arnett, a junior, started 22 games last year averaging 3.4 points and 2.3 assists.

Also returning are freshmen Damarius Smith and Carter Sanderson who redshirted last season.

Junior Deonte Alexander joins the Bisons after two standout seasons at East Mississippi Community College where he scored 952 points.  He led them to a 52-12 record and two appearances in the national tournament.

The Bisons have four true freshmen on scholarship.  Zavion Williams is a 5-foot-10 guard from West Creek High School in Clarksville, Tenn.  Martin Smith, a 6-foot-4 forward, and Malcolm Smith, a 6-foot-5 forward, are twins from Clarksville Academy. Marvin Williams is a 6-8 power forward from White Station High School in Memphis.

Two walk-ons were added in early October.  Zack Ellis is a 6-foot-5 sophomore forward from Franklin, Tenn., and Chad Johnson is a 6-foot-0 freshman guard from Edmond, Okla.

Poll Action
Lipscomb was selected by the A-Sun coaches and media to finish sixth in the conference preseason poll. The Bisons were one vote shy of Mercer in the coaches’ poll for fifth place.  Belmont was picked to win the league in both polls.

Not the most Inexperienced
Lipscomb has seven freshman on its 2011-12 roster and returns 28.6 percent of its scoring from last year.   Air Force leads the country with 11 freshmen and is one of 12 schools with seven or more freshmen. St. John’s returns just 3.7 percent of its scoring (85-of-2,313) and is one of seven schools to return less than 20 percent of their scoring.
