Lipscomb guard Deonte Alexander squatted near midcourt and pulled his jersey over his head in anguish.
Without saying a word, Alexander, the leading scorer for the Bison with 12 points, said all that needed to be said about Saturday night’s 62-61 loss at the buzzer to Atlantic Sun foe USC Upstate at Allen Arena.
Upstate guard Ty Greene sealed the fate of the Bison with a 3-pointer with one second left on the clock. Greene finished with a game-high 17 points, hitting four-of-eight attempts from 3-point range.
“Deonte was on him,” Lipscomb coach Scott Sanderson said. “He made a tough shot.
“We played better. We made some shots. We were much better defensively. We held them to 40 percent and it has been a long time since we have done that. We did some good things.”
The Bison led 33-27 at intermission. They led by 14 with 14:43 when a free throw by Alexander gave the Bison a 47-33 lead.
When Olumuyiwa hit a free throw at 14:26 Upstate went on an 18-4 run that tied the game at 51-51 on a 3-pointer by Torrey Craig.
The Bison fought back and took over the lead once again. They led 57-52 with 5:03 left on a jumper by Alexander, but Upstate refused to give up. With 14 seconds remaining Martin Smith sank a 3-pointer that gave Lipscomb a 61-59 lead, setting the stage for the last second shot by Upstate.
“I was proud of our guys and their effort,” Sanderson said. “We battled and competed. I thought we played extremely hard.
“Upstate hurt us on the backboards. When we got down we made some plays. Martin made the big three, but Ty Greene hit the tough shot to win the game.”
Only eight players saw action for the Bison. Despite the loss, Sanderson was pleased with the way his players came together as a team.
“If the last shot had not gone down we would have all felt differently,” Sanderson said. “But the last shot did go down and we feel the way we feel.”
Center Justin Glenn, who was having stomach issues for most of the game, added 10 points for the Bison. He and Alexander tied for the team lead in rebounds with five each.
Babatunde Olumuyiwa added 13 points for Upstate. Forward Jodd Maxey grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds as Upstate held a 39-32 advantage on the boards, including a 12-to-5 edge in offensive rebounds.
Upstate has won its last four games in a row and eight of the last nine for an 18-10 record overall, 11-4 in the A-Sun.
The Bison, 12-15, 7-8 in the conference, are back in action Monday night at 6:30 at Allen Arena. It is the final home game of the season and will also be “Senior Night.”
