NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After opening home Atlantic Sun Conference action with a 60-56 win over ETSU on Saturday night, the Lipscomb men’s basketball team continues home action on Monday night hosting USC Upstate at 5 p.m. at Allen Arena.
Originally set for a 7:15 p.m. tilt, the contest was moved up earlier this month to avoid conflict with the BCS national championship game.
After posting double-doubles in five of the last six games, Bison redshirt freshman Stephen Hurt has overtaken the scoring chart for Lipscomb averaging 12.6 points per game. The newcomer leads the A-Sun in rebounding. hauling in 8.9 boards per game, a number that ranks him tied for third nationally in rebounds by a center.
Hurt is joined in double figures by Martin Smith (11.4 ppg), Deonte Alexander (11.2 ppg) and Malcolm Smith (11.1 ppg). The Bisons are joined by Stetson as the only two teams in the league with four players with a double figure scoring average.
The Spartans (7-7, 1-0 A-Sun) are paced by A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year Torrey Craig. The junior averages a league-best 17.4 points per game for the Spartans.
The contest will also feature a battle of the A-Sun’s top two rebounders as Upstate’s Ricardo Glenn enters the contest averaging 8.6 rebounds per outing just behind Hurt’s 8.9 average. The Bisons have won the rebound battle in 12-of-14 games this season, meanwhile the Spartans have held an advantage on the boards in the past five games outrebounding their opponents 201-132.
Lipscomb leads the all-time series 6-4 between the two schools.
