DELAND, Fla. – Hoping to build off of Thursday night’s win at Florida Gulf Coast, the Lipscomb men’s basketball team failed to keep the momentum going falling 85-69 to Stetson in Atlantic Sun Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
The Bisons (7-11, 2-5 A-Sun) were unable to overcome shooting woes from beyond the arch as Lipscomb managed to hit only 5-of-17. Senior guard Deonte Alexander hit four of those shots on seven attempts leaving the rest of the team 1-for-10.
“I loved our effort and energy,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson. “Today, we didn’t shoot the ball well. We got the same shots we had at FGCU but we didn’t shoot it as well. I don’t like getting beat but I like where our team is mentally.
“They know without me having to beat them down who played well and who didn’t and we had a couple of guys who didn’t play particularly well. On the road in this league, you have to have everybody playing fairly decent and we didn’t have that.”
After trailing 36-29 at the half, the Bisons would close to within three at 49-46 at 13:33 when senior guard Deonte Alexander drained a trey from deep with a hand in his face. Stetson responded with a 17-5 and pulled away and Lipscomb would not get within two possessions the rest of the game.
Alexander followed up a career-high 29-point effort against FGCU, with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor. Junior guard Khion Sankey and sophomore forward Malcolm Smith each finished with 10 as the duo scored in double figures for the second-straight game.
Chris Perez paced the Hatters with a 21-point afternoon just ahead of Adam Pegg, who scored 20 points and added a game-high 10 rebounds.
Stetson outshot the Bisons 50 percent to 43.3 percent and won the battle of the boards 37-31.
“Like I told the team, this is not a sprint,” said Sanderson. “It’s a marathon. We still have a lot of room to grow. We’ve grown leaps and bounds this week. I hope we can grow the same going into next week with two home games.”
Lipscomb returns home on Thursday for A-Sun action against Kennesaw State at 6:30 p.m. The contest will air on ESPN3. To purchase tickets visit http://www.beherdlu.com or call 615-966-HERD (4373).
