Lipscomb's Bisons thrilled an Allen Arena crowd, which included almost 100 former players, with an 83-74 victory over Nicholls State Saturday night.
"This team is focused and confident," said Lipscomb coach Scott Sanderson. "Hopefully, that will continue to turn into wins."
The Bisons controlled the first half, taking the lead from the first shot, a 3-pointer by James Poindexter. Offensively, the Bisons held the advantage leading by as many as 17 points at 37-20 with 4:23 left before intermission.
At the half the Bisons led 43-28.
The second half started out a little differently for the Bisons. Nicholls State went on a 21-5 run to take a 49-48 lead at14:33.
The Bisons would tie the game at 49-49 on a free throw by Brian Fisk at 12:19. A field goal by Dominique Geason gaveNicholls State the lead again at 51-49 qt 12:02.
"We knew they would come out of halftime strong," Sanderson said. "I just hoped we could stay focused."
At the 11:52 mark Matt Jarboe hit a 3-pointer from the top of the circle for the Bisons to give then a 52-51 edge. The Bisons would never trail again.
"I think that shows the character of this team," Sanderson said. "A lot of teams, after losing a lead like that, would give up."
Their biggest lead in the second half was 15 points (80-65) with 1:27 left in the game.
Six Bisons players finished in double figures. LaBrian Lyons and Matt Jarboe each finished with 14. It was the first collegiate double-figures scoring effort for Lyons, who was four-of-eight from 3-point range.
NichollsState placed five players in double figures with Stefan Blaszczynski scoring a game-high 24.
Cameron Robinson, the Atlantic Conference rebound leader, continued his dominance on the boards with a game-high 10 rebounds. The Bisons held a 41-31 advantage on the boards.
"We did a good job on the boards," Sanderson said. "I'm proud of the job our big men did."
Center Charlie Jenney, who has been sidelined all season with an injury, played less than a minute in the first half, making his first game appearance of the season.
Lipscomb is 5-1. Nicholls State slipped to 1- 4.
