The Bisons came up short Saturday night as they tried to build on their 3 game road winning streak against conference opponent Gardner-Webb. Lipscomb trailed at halftime 36-29 and never could take the lead in the second half. The Bisons fell to 7-9 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Runnin' Bulldogs improved to 7-9 and 1-1 in the conference.
"We were never in this game," said head coach Scott Sanderson. "That score is not even an indication of the game itself. That game there was baffling to me."
After trading baskets for the first 4 minutes, the Runnin' Bulldogs went on a 14-5 run to extend their lead out to 23-11 at the 9:54 mark. Lipscomb would continue to trail Gardner-Webb throughout the rest of the first half. At the intermission the Bisons found themselves down 36-29.
Lipscomb was 11-29 from the field in the first half (38%). The Bisons went 1-7 from behind the three point line (14%). Gardner-Webb was 15-40 from the field (38%), and they went 5-15 from behind the three point line (33%).
The Bisons came into the second half needing to cut into a 7 point deficit. However, Lipscomb did not score their first point until the 14:57 mark of the second half. A Runnin' Bulldogs 6-0 run to open up the second half put the Bisons in a 13 point hole. Lipscomb would never really cut deep into this lead throughout the rest of the game.
"We come down five straight times and don't score, and they don't score either. We needed to get a couple of buckets to go down, and then the first bucket of the game was a three point play for him (Matt French). We never really got back in the game, and they dropped a couple of threes back to back to back over here and got the lead out there to sixteen or seventeen, and we just never recovered," said Sanderson.
Despite the disappointing road loss, the Bisons did have 4 players score in double figures. Adnan Hodzic had a career high 14 points to go along with a career high10 rebounds. LaKory Daniels had 13 points. Brandon Brown had 10 points and 7 rebounds. Eddie Ard was only 2-13 from the field, but he did go 8-8 from the free-throw line on his way to 12 points.
"We were in quick sand it seemed like offensively. We just didn't move the basketball. We didn't move it very well. We were not sharp at all, and we got what we deserved," said Sanderson.
Lipscomb is now 7-9 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Gardner-Webb is also 7-9 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic Sun conference.
Lipscomb will get to come back home to Allen Arena for the first time since December 3, 2007. They will take on the Bruins from Belmont in the "Battle of the Boulevard". Lipscomb swept the rivalry series last year. Game time is set for 3 p.m. CST. Coverage of this game can be heard on 1200 AM.
