Wright, Hodzic combine for 43 in 83-67 win at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Brian Wright scored a career high 23 points and Adnan Hodzic had 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Lipscomb University Bisons defeated the Campbell University Fighting Camels Monday evening in Buies Creek, N.C.

“Brian Wright jumped up there and made some big shots for us, especially in the second half,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson.  “I thought he gave us a huge lift off the bench.”

Wright finished 8-of-10 from the floor including four-of-six from the three point line.  It was his second career 20-point game.

The Bisons entered the game losing seven of their last nine games.  In those seven games Lipscomb turned the ball over 19.4 times per game.  Monday the Bisons turned the ball over ten times, including just three in the second half.

“I thought we did a good job by only turning the ball over three times in the second half,” Sanderson said.  “It was one of our goals to have fewer turnovers.”

Lipscomb opened the game on a 10-1 run.  Campbell didn’t connect on its first field goal until the 13:52 mark.

The Bisons were up 16-5 with 12:07 left in the half before Campbell went on a 16-4 run to go up 21-20 with 6:55 left when the Bisons called a timeout.

Lipscomb responded with a 10-0 run to go up 30-21 with 3:47 left.  Lipscomb held a 38-25 advantage at the half.

Campbell cut Lipscomb’s lead to seven (52-45) on a 3-pointer by Lorne Merthie with 13:15 left.

Merthie hit another three, his third in just over two minutes, with 12:08 to bring Campbell back to within six (54-48).

Lipscomb went on an 18-6 run over the next 9:40 to go up 72-54 with 3:28 remaining.

But the Fighting Camels were not finished.  Jabril Bailey entered the game for the first time at 3:29 left and promptly nailed a jumper and a three for Campbell.  Then Campbell connected on five free throws to cap an 11-3 run.

Lipscomb scored their final ten points from the free throw line.

Jonathan Rodriguez and Lorne Merthie scored 15 each to lead Campbell.

Josh Slater delivered a strong performance with seven points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals with no turnovers.

Michael Lusk also finished in double figures with 13 points.  He had seven assists and was 9-of-12 from the free throw line.

Lipscomb finished with 21 assists on 26 baskets.

The Bisons shot 26-of-48 (54.2 percent) from the field.  Campbell was 25-of-64 (39.1 percent from the floor).

“We held them to 39 percent instead of 43 or 44 percent and that’s eight or ten more points a game right there,” Sanderson said.

Lipscomb was 6-of-17 (35.3 percent) from the 3-point line.  Campbell was 6-of-26 (23.1 percent) from downtown.

Lipscomb was only 25-of-44 (56.8 percent) from the free throw line.  Campbell was 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) from the free throw line.

“We are getting to the line more than anyone else in the league, but we have to capitalize and make them,” Sanderson said.

Lipscomb improves to 9-13, 5-8 in the A-Sun.  Campbell falls to 10-14, 7-8 in the A-Sun.

The Bisons return home to Allen Arena Thursday evening to face Belmont in the “Battle of the Boulevard.”  Game time is 6 p.m.   It will be televised on CSS.
