Bisons defeat Mercer 88-67 to win fifth straight

MACON, GA. – The Lipscomb University Bisons jumped out to a 12-2 lead Friday evening and went on to defeat Mercer University 88-67 in the Atlantic Sun Game of the Week.

It was the fifth consecutive win for the Bisons who continued their run to improve their seed in the Atlantic Sun tournament.

Adnan Hodzic scored 14 points in the first half including six of the Bisons first eight.  He finished with 20 points and eight rebounds.

Five Lipscomb players finished in double figures.

Josh Slater posted his second straight double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Monday he had 10 points and 10 assists against ETSU.

Brian Wright had 13 while Jimmy Oden and Michael Lusk added 11 each.

Lipscomb went up 21-8 on a layup by Hodzic at the halfway mark of the first half.  Lipscomb used a 9-0 run to make it a 40-15 game with four minutes remaining in the half.  Mercer responded with a 10-0 run to bring the spread back to 15 with 1:32 to play in the first half.

Lipscomb held a 46-29 advantage at intermission.

The storyline of the second half was all about James Florence.  The Mercer guard scored 22 in the second period to finish with 34 on 13-of-19 shooting.

Lipscomb was up 58-40 with just over fifteen minutes to play when Florence went on fire. 

He scored 13 points over the next six minutes to lead Mercer on an 18-7 run to bring the game within five (64-59).

After two successful free throws by Hodzic and Florence, Michael Teller connected on a 3-pointer with 8:50 remaining to swing the flow of the game back to Lipscomb’s favor.

Neither team scored until Teller drained another 3-pointer to put the Bisons up 11 with 7:37 left.

Mercer was not able to cut Lipscomb’s lead under ten from there on out.  The Bears did not hit a field goal in the final 4:42.

Hodzic’s 20 points extends his streak of scoring in double figures to 22 consecutive games tying the NCAA-era record of Brian Fisk set in the 2005-06 season.

Mercer capitalized on Lipscomb’s 17 turnovers with 19 points.

The Bisons shot 29-of-51 (56.9 percent) from the field.  Mercer was 24-of-61 (39.3 percent).

Lipscomb was 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) from the 3-point line.  Mercer finished 6-of-24 (25 percetn).

After shooting just 56.8 percent from the charity line Monday night against ETSU, the Bisons rebounded to shoot 20-of-26 (76.9 percent) from the line.  Mercer shot 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) from the free throw line.

Lipscomb improves to 13-13, 9-8 in the A-Sun.  Mercer is 16-12, 10-7 in the A-Sun.

The Bisons play their final road game Sunday when they travel to Kennesaw, Ga., to face Kennesaw State.  Game time is 2 p.m.
