KENNESAW, Ga. – Junior Josh Slater scored a career high for the second straight game finishing with 29 points and 11 assists in Lipscomb’s 97-91 loss to Kennesaw State Saturday evening at the Convocation Center in Kennesaw, Ga.
Kennesaw State (4-4, 1-1 A-Sun) shot a blistering 76.0 percent from the 3-point line hitting 19-of-25 attempts. It was the most 3-pointers made by an NCAA team this year and it was the most 3-pointers by a Lipscomb opponent since the Bisons joined the NCAA.
“The shot it at an alarming rate,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson. “We pushed out on them and they went back even further. They made some difficult shots.”
“You can’t go in the gym and shoot 19-of-25, let alone do it in a game with guys on you and hands in your face. The rate they are shooting the ball is absolutely amazing.”
Kennesaw finished 35-of-55 from the floor for 63.6 percent.
Lipscomb (2-5, 1-1 A-Sun) was able to keep the game competitive by shooting 51.5 percent (34-of-66) and scoring 24 points on 17 Kennesaw turnovers.
Lipscomb was outrebounded for the first time this season. Kennesaw held a 31-21 advantage on the boards. Slater led the Bisons with seven rebounds coming close to having a triple-double.
Spencer Dixon hit Kennesaw’s first 3-pointer on their first possession to start the game. Three possessions later Kennesaw’s Kurtis Woods drained a three to start a streak of a 3-pointer on five straight possessions for the Owls.
Kennesaw wasn’t able to gain an early lead as Lipscomb hit seven of its first ten field goal attempts including two three pointers by Michael Teller and one by Brandon Brown.
Kennesaw closed the first half on a 15-3 run hitting five threes over the final 4:02 to take a 51-38 lead into the locker room. It was the largest lead of the game for Kennesaw.
Each time the Bisons cut Kennesaw’s lead down, the Owls made timely long balls to rebuild their lead.
Lipscomb came within three, 72-69, with 8:51 left following a 3-pointer by Slater and two free throws by Brown.
Kennesaw hit two jumpers and two free throws and Adnan Hodzic missed layups on three consecutive possessions as Kennesaw regained a nine point lead at the 6:38 mark.
Brandon Brown had a conventional three-point play with 2:02 left to bring the Bisons within four, 86-82. Keven McConnell drained Kennesaw’s 19th 3-pointer to put them back up seven.
Lipscomb was forced to begin fouling and Kennesaw hit all six of its free throw attempts in the last minute.
Brown had 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting including four-of-eight from beyond the arc. Hodzic added 17 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Lipscomb returns to Allen Arena Thursday evening when they face SIU Edwardsville at 7 p.m.
