DELAND, FLA. – Juniors Josh Slater and Adnan Hodzic scored 26 points each as the Lipscomb Bisons defeated Stetson 85-71 Saturday evening in the Edmunds Center.
Slater finished with seven assists, five rebounds and four steals after missing triple-double Thursday by one rebound.
“In the last two games he has played like he’s capable of playing,” coach Scott Sanderson said. “And when he play’s at that level we are a totally different team. The key is can he maintain his focus.”
Slater and Hodzic were both 11-of-16 from the field as the Bisons shot 50 percent from the field for the contest.
The Bisons maintained excellent control of the ball with Jacob Arnett, Jordan Burgason, and Slater finishing with 17 assists while committing just two turnovers. Arnett equaled Slater with seven assists, a career-high. Lipscomb turned the ball over ten times tying its second lowest mark of the season.
Lipscomb never trailed after opening the contest with a wide-open layup by Brandon Brown assisted by Slater.
Lipscomb took a 28-11 lead at the 10:12 mark following a 14-2 run over five minutes. The Bisons hit four of their first six attempts from beyond the arc.
Slater finished three of six from downtown while Burgason connected on four of eight attempts. It was the 12th game of the year that Burgason hit four or more threes. He finished with 12 points.
Stetson made a run towards the end of the first half scoring on four straight possessions including hitting a pair of threes to make it a seven-point game with 2:01 remaining.
Lipscomb closed the half by scoring eight unanswered points, including a three by Slater off a Stetson defensive gamble with 15 seconds left, to take a 44-29 lead into the locker room.
Stetson made 12 first half turnovers which the Bisons converted into 15 points. The Hatters made only three second half turnovers as they worked to bring the game to ten points, 56-46, with 11:24 left.
After Hodzic and Stetson’s Ridge Graham exchanged baskets, Hodzic added five more points followed by a three by Slater and a three-point play by Arnett to push Lipscomb’s lead to 19 points, 69-50, with 8:36 remaining.
Stetson used two threes and a dunk to close the gap to 12 points, 80-68, at the 1:47 mark.
The teams each grabbed 37 rebounds. Junior Michael Teller led the Bisons with six boards while Ridge Graham and Liam McInerney each brought down nine rebounds for the Hatters (6-22, 4-15 A-Sun).
Hodzic extended his streak of scoring in double-figures to a nation-leading 54 games.
Tyshawn Patterson led Stetson with 18 points. Ridge Graham added 16 with all but two coming after the half.
Lipscomb improves to 15-12 and 12-6 in the Atlantic Sun. Stetson drops to 6-22 and 4-15 in the conference.
