Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson announced the signings of John Ross Glover from the University School of Jackson in Jackson, Tenn., and Charles Smith from Southwind High School in Memphis, Tenn., to National Letters of Intent during the fall early signing period.
Glover was the 2011 TSSAA Division II Mr. Basketball recipient as a junior. He was a finalist his sophomore year. He averaged 22.7 points and 7.8 rebounds last year as a junior
“John Ross can shoot the three, shoot a mid-range jumper and put the ball on the floor,” said Sanderson. “He’s strong and athletic. He can play multiple positions and will fit well into our team.”
Glover was named to the 2010 and 2011 All-State teams by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association and has won numerous regional awards.
Sanderson credited Glover’s success to his work ethic.
“He gets up early every morning to lift weights and shoot,” said Sanderson. “For a 17-year-old it’s hard to be disciplined enough to do that on his own and we like that component which he'll bring to our team next year.”
Smith is a 6-foot-9, 190-pound forward/center with a tremendous upside. He plays alongside several high-major Division I prospects at Southwind.
“Charles is a unique player,” said Sanderson. “He’s very athletic, a good runner, and he can rebound the ball and block shots.”
Sanderson believes that Smith has all the elements needed to be a great player but he need to get stronger.
“He knows that he has to get stronger and that’s a process that takes time. He has a whole year before he plays college basketball. His contribution early on depends on how hard he works over the next year.”
“Charles is another great person who will fit well at Lipscomb.”
Both Glover and Smith will be freshmen at Lipscomb for the 2012-13 season.
The Bison open their regular season Friday at 7:15 p.m. against Fort Valley State. The game will be broadcast on 102.5 The Game presented by Jackson and on ASun.TV.
