Wednesday, December 21, 2011
AMES, Iowa – In a game advertised as a homecoming for Ames native and Lipscomb senior Jordan Burgason, the star of the show delivered an award-winning performance.
Burgason nailed nine 3-pointers setting a school NCAA era single-game record and tying the Hilton Coliseum record in Lipscomb’s 81-64 loss to Iowa State (9-3) Wednesday evening
His 30 points were a team season-high and the 15th occurrence for Lipscomb (6-8) in the last ten years.
The Ames High School product wasted little time in starting his performance scoring eight of the Bison’s first 12 points.
Down six in the first half, Lipscomb scored seven straight points to take a one-point lead on a jumper in the lane by junior Deonte Alexander at the 6:07 mark. It was Lipscomb’s only advantage in the game. Iowa State was up 38-30 at halftime.
Lipscomb opened the second period with baskets by junior Jacob Arnett and senior Justin Glenn to cut the game to four. A 15-5 run by Iowa State which included nearly a four minute scoring drought by the Bison allowed the Cyclones to go up 53-39 at the 12:35 mark.
Burgason was not ready to give in hitting three treys over the next two minutes. The Bison went on to cut the game to single digits three times but were unable to bring the deficit under seven points.
A three by Burgason and a dunk by Glenn gave Lipscomb a fighting chance with 4:39 left and down seven, 68-61. The Bison only scored one basket in the final stretch.
Lipscomb struggled once again from the free throw line shooting 4-of-11 and hit just one of seven attempts in the second half. Iowa State hit 21-of-30 free shots.
Glenn finished one rebound shy of a double-double with ten points and nine rebounds. The Cyclones held a 41-34 advantage on the boards.
Iowa State shot 46.3 percent from the field while the Bison connected on 38.5 percent of their attempts.
Scott Christopherson scored 24 points and Chris Allen added 23 tallies to lead Iowa State.
Lipscomb dropped to 0-6 this season on the road.
Lipscomb has an extended break over the holidays before traveling to Jacksonville on Jan. 2. The game will be broadcast by the Lipscomb Sports Network presented by Jackson on 102.5 The Game.
