JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Lipscomb opened the second half with a 15-2 run lifting the Bison to a 77-71 win at Jacksonville Monday and snapping an eight-game road losing streak.
Freshman Damarius Smith delivered a bolt of energy to Lipscomb (7-8, 2-1 A-Sun) with a high-flying fastbreak dunk over the shoulders of Jacksonville’s (2-11, 0-2 A-Sun) Russell Powell on the second possession after halftime. A foul was called and Damarius converted the free throw for a traditional three-point play giving Lipscomb a 41-38 lead.
In Jacksonville’s first ten possessions of the second period, the Dolphins missed five shots and made four turnovers. Powell made a layup at the 15:42 mark but the Dolphins wouldn’t score their second field goal until nearly nine minutes into the half.
In his first game back from surgery that caused him to miss five games, freshman guard Zavion Williams scored 12 points including hitting a 3-pointer with 8:05 left giving Lipscomb a 16-point lead, its largest lead of the game.
The Bison would need every point of that lead.
Senior Jordan Burgason hit a three with six minutes to play but that would be Lipscomb’s only field goal in the final stretch.
At the same time the Dolphins finally found their shooting stroke hitting 10-of-15 attempts in the final eight minutes closing the game to four points with 11.9 seconds left after back-to-back 3-pointers by Tevin Galvin.
Burgason hit two free throws with 4.9 seconds remaining to seal the game. Lipscomb was 20-of-24 at the charity line compared to 8-of-16 for Jacksonville.
Burgason led Lipscomb with 17 points. Junior college transfer Deonte Alexander posted 14 points and hit four 3-pointers for the third time this season.
Lipscomb led 37-33 in rebounding and was paced by senior Justin Glenn who finished with 10 rebounds and was one point short of a double-double.
In the first half the Lipscomb shot 56.5 percent but allowed Jacksonville to score 18 points off 11 turnovers. The game was tied at 38 at halftime.
Lipscomb shot 45.3 percent on the night while Jacksonville converted 45.2 percent of its shots.
The Bison play their sixth straight road game Wednesday evening at North Florida, also located in Jacksonville. The game is set to tip at 6:45 central and will be carried by the Lipscomb Sports Network presented by Jackson on 102.5 The Game and LipscombSports.com.
