DELAND, Fla. - The Lipscomb men’s basketball team entered Saturday’s Atlantic Sun Conference game against the Stetson Hatters with several question marks following the dismissal of all-conference guard Jordan Burgason.
The Bison (12-13, 7-6) overcame the adversity and question marks to win a gritty 99-91 overtime battle against Stetson (8-17, 5-9). Lipscomb won 104-103 in overtime in the first meeting between the two teams on Jan. 16 in Allen Arena.
With the loss of Burgason and his 16.4 points per game, three Bison stepped up and reached career scoring highs. Junior Deonte Alexander led Lipscomb with 27 points while freshman Marvin Williams had 16 points and freshman Damarius Smith posted 14 points.
“I’m really proud of our guys with all that has gone on this week,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson. “It’s about ‘team’ and when something happens you have to rally around each other. I thought we had a really good team effort.”
Marvin Williams scored 14 of his points in the opening period as the Bison led 43-37 at halftime.
Stetson utilized a 13-2 run to take a five-point lead with 3:47 to play in regulation. Alexander cut the game to 69-67 with a three on the next possession. Lipscomb scored its next two baskets on fastbreaks following Stetson turnovers.
With about ten seconds to play and the game tied, Alexander missed a running jumper and Stetson pushed the ball down the court on the break. Damarius fouled Stetson’s Willie Green to prevent a layup. He made both free throws to put Stetson ahead with 6.4 seconds left.
Damarius took the inbounds and went coast-to-coast making a layup and picking up a foul with 1.6 ticks left. He missed the free throw and the game went into overtime tied at 74.
Lipscomb scored on its first six possessions in overtime and posted 25 points in the extra five minute period.
The Bison led 42-36 on the boards. Marvin Williams, Justin Glenn, and Malcolm Smith had six boards each.
Lipscomb shot 47.8 percent from the field and 3-of-15 (20 percent) from beyond the arc. Stetson shot 47.6 percent.
Lipscomb had 52 points in the paints and connected on a season-high 30-of-42 free throws.
Adam Pegg led four Hatters in double figures with 18 points. Green had 17 tallies.
Lipscomb continues its road trip Monday night against Florida Gulf Coast in Ft. Myers, Fla, at 6 p.m. central. The Lipscomb Sports Network presented by Jackson will carry the action on 102.5 The Game.
