OXFORD, Miss. – Unable to overcome slow starts in both halves of action, the Lipscomb men’s basketball team dropped a 91-45 non-conference decision to Ole Miss at the Tad Smith Coliseum in Oxford, Miss.
Getting a combined 13 points from the starting five, the Bisons (2-2) had to rely on the bench for scoring. Redshirt freshman big man Stephen Hurt led the way for LU with a 14-point night. Freshman guard John Ross Glover followed closely behind with a dozen, his first double-digit effort of his career.
“Ole Miss is extremely big and physical at every position,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson. “We had a hard time getting good shots and the good shots that we did get we’re coming up short. They overpowered us and that’s what good teams are supposed to do.
“When you’ve got that kind of speed and quickness out on the perimeter it’s hard to generate offense. We didn’t really have any guards that could beat their guards off the dribble.”
In the first meeting of the two schools in over a decade, Ole Miss (5-0) senior Murphy Holloway led the way for the Rebels with a 23-point night on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor. Holloway was joined in double figures by Nick Williams, who finished with 14, and Marshall Henderson and Reginald Buckner, who each finished with 10.
Holloway and crew outshot the Bisons 43.5 percent to 24.5 percent and forced Lipscomb into 26 turnovers leading Sanderson to comment that “We’re turning the ball over way too much”.
The Bisons did win the battle on the boards with a 43-38 advantage in rebounds marking the third-straight game that LU hauled in 40-plus rebounds. Hurt led the Bisons with seven ahead of six by junior guard Khion Sankey.
With the loss, the Bisons fall to 0-5 all-time against Ole Miss and 0-2 in the NCAA Division I era.
“Ole Miss is a very good basketball team and they will do well in the SEC this year,” said Sanderson.
Lipscomb returns home on Monday night hosting 2012 NCAA Tournament darling Murray State at Allen Arena at 6:30 p.m. Monday night's game features a special $5 ticket deal good through Midnight on Friday when using promo code THANKS12 The game will also be featured as n exclusive ESPN3 broadcast.
