MACON, Ga. – Lipscomb guard Khion Sankey has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week as announced by the league on Tuesday.
The Stockton, Calif, native averaged 11 points, six rebounds and 2.5 assists per game last week as the Bisons went 1-1 topping UT Martin on Saturday night after falling at Belmont on Tuesday.
“Khion does a lot of things really well,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson. “He distributes the ball. He scores when he has to. He rebounds the basketball and brings our team internal toughness.
“It’s not any one thing you can put your finger on. All of those things combined, he’s a very valuable part of our team.”
The junior opened the week with a season-high 15 points against the Bruins before producing a solid all-around game against UT-Martin with seven points, seven rebounds and four assists in the victory. For the week, Sankey shot 56.2 percent from the floor on 9-of-16 shooting.
The league award is the first for Sankey, a junior college transfer from Sheridan College. On the season, Sankey ranks second in the A-Sun in rebounding averaging 8.1 boards per game. He also ranks fifth in the conference in assists per game averaging 3.3 helpers a night.
The Bisons continue play on Saturday taking on No. 22 Kentucky at Rupp Arena in a game that is featured on Fox Sports Net at 11:30 a.m. CST.
