MACON, Ga. – After helping the Lipscomb men’s basketball team to a 2-0 week against the top two teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference, freshman guard Garrison Mathews has been honored as the A-Sun Newcomer of the Week as announced by the league on Monday.
The Franklin, Tennessee native opened the week with a 15-point, 10-rebound, five-assist outing against league co-leader Jacksonville as he collected his first career double-double. Mathews then followed that performance with a career-high 23-point effort against the other league co-leader, North Florida, on Saturday afternoon. The rookie added 10 rebounds and five more assists in the win as Lipscomb improved to 6-5 in league play.
On the week Mathews averaged 19.0 points per game to go along with 10 rebounds and five assists per outing. The award is the second of the season for Mathews, joining fellow newcomer Eli Pepper with two Newcomer of the Week awards.
The Bisons continue league play on Thursday night with a 6 p.m. contest at Florida Gulf Coast on ESPN3.
