Hampton, Mathews, Pepper earn A-Sun postseason honors

MACON, Ga. – With the 2015-16 Lipscomb men’s basketball regular season in the books, the Atlantic Sun Conference coaches have made their selections for the 2016 A-Sun All-Conference and All-Freshman with a trio of Bisons earning postseason honors.

Junior guard J.C. Hampton leads the way for Lipscomb with a second-team, all-conference selection.  The Gainesville, Georgia native leads the Bisons in scoring averaging 15.6 points per contest and earlier in the season became the 46th member of the 1,000-point club at Lipscomb.

“J.C. really bounced back from a tough, injury-riddled sophomore year to be a very consistent, player for us this season,” said Lipscomb head coach Casey Alexander. “I’m proud of him and the way he’s led our team throughout the year.”

Newcomers Garrison Mathews and Eli Pepper were selected as two of the honorees on the five-man Atlantic Sun All-Freshman team.   The duo finished the season with two A-Sun Newcomer of the Week honors each.

“Eli and Garrison have been asked to more than either was probably ready for because of our early-season injuries,” said Alexander. “They’ve both responded in grand fashion and really stepped up for us.  These guys have a great future ahead of them.”

Mathews finished with a 15.2 points per game average in league play ranking second among all freshmen in the league.  Pepper led all freshmen and ranked third in the league with 8.3 rebounds per contest in conference contests.

The Bisons open play in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament on Tuesday night taking on Jacksonville at 6 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium in Jacksonville, Florida.  The contest will air on ESPN3 from the “Sunshine State”.
