BOSTON – After helping lead the Lipscomb men’s basketball team to a pair of ASUN Conference road wins last week, sophomore Garrison Mathews has been named the Lou Henson Award National Player of the Week by the association.
The Franklin, Tennessee native opened the week with a 19-point, 7-rebound outing at FGCU as the Bisons moved into a tie atop the ASUN standings with the Eagles. Mathews followed up that performance with a 20-point effort in 19 minutes at Stetson on Saturday as Lipscomb improved to 9-2 in league play.
The guard ranks third in the ASUN in scoring in league games averaging 20.5 points per game against conference opponents. He also leads all guards in the league in rebounding with a 6.6 boards per game average.
The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top Mid-Major player in Division I college basketball.
The award is named in honor of Lou Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.
