BOSTON – Lipscomb junior guard Garrison Mathews has been named to the 2017-18 Lou Henson Award preseason watch list as announced by the organization on Wednesday.
Mathews is one of 51 players on the list for the award that is handed out annually to the nation’s top NCAA Division I mid-major player. The Franklin, Tennessee native is just the second Lipscomb player to receive the honor joining former teammate Josh Williams.
Already named a unanimous selection to the All-ASUN Conference team by the league’s coaches, Mathews returns as the top returning scoring in the ASUN after averaging 20.4 points per game and becoming the fastest Bison in the NCAA era to reach the 1,000-point mark.
The Bisons open 2017-18 action on Friday night hosting Emory at 6:30 p.m. at Allen Arena. To purchase tickets, call 615-966-HERD (4373) or visit http://www.LipscombTickets.com
Lou Henson coached 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.
The 2017-18 Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award will be announced on March 31, 2018 at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Event in San Antonio, site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
