LAKEPOINT, Ga. – After helping the Bisons clinch the No. 2 seed in the ASUN Championship with a perfect 2-0 week, Lipscomb’s Garrison Mathews has been named the ASUN Conference Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.
Not only is it the fifth time he has been honored this season, but it is the sixth of his career – setting the program record for most career weekly awards previously held by Adnan Hodzic.
The junior guard helped guide the Bisons to a pair of big road wins over the weekend, knocking off Stetson 82-73 Thursday before taking down ASUN champion Florida Gulf Coast 90-87 on Saturday.
In the two contests, Mathews averaged 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steal while connecting on 60.0 percent of his field goal attempts (12-of-20).
In 26 minutes against the Hatters, Mathews dropped 17 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. He was good on 5-of-10 field goal attempts and 5-of-8 from the line.
The Franklin, Tennessee native followed with a 23-point effort against the Eagles in the Bisons regular season road finale. He also chipped in six rebounds, three long balls and two assists. He hit 7-of-10 from the field and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Mathews leads the ASUN in scoring at 21.7 points per game and has scored 20+ points in a league-high 18 contests. This is the sixth Player of the Week award for the Bisons this season after Rob Marberry brought home the honor last week.
The Bisons are back home on Thursday, Feb. 22 for the regular season finale and senior night against Kennesaw State. Tip is set for 6:30 p.m. at Allen Arena.
