NASHVILLE, Tenn.-The Lipscomb Bisons cross country team finished second Friday in the Tennessee Tech Invitational in Cookeville.
Coach Bill Taylor described the performance as the best meet of the year for his Bisons. They finished behind Evansville in the six-team field that included Tennessee Tech, North Alabama, Carson-Newman and Tennessee State.
Taylor entered 21 runners. After the race he cut his team to 11 runners with the nine best scheduled to compete in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships Oct. 27.
“The guys made improvements and that is what we were looking for,” Taylor said. “They were very competitive.
“They were maybe a little too aggressive at the beginning, but I would rather see that. We can always adjust from that. We still have room to grow, but it was a nice step forward.”
Sophomore Ryan Gadsey set the pace for the Bisons finishing fifth with a time of 27:31.60.
Freshman Daniel Gardner placed sixth (27:34.35) and freshman Jared Wingerter was seventh (27:38.97).
“We have had a different No. 1 guy in each race,” Taylor said. “Ryan is getting better after starting off the season kind of slow. He has been working his way up and is quite valuable for the team.
“Jared had his best meet of the year,” Taylor said. “And Daniel continues to be up in the mix.”
Also finishing in the top 15 in the field of more than 60 runners were senior Ashton Fisher (10th, 28:00.61), sophomore Tate Honaker placed 11th (28:08.53), senior Ben Wright (13th, 28:20.14), freshman Fidel Leon (14th, 28:20.44) and sophomore Dan Coleman in 15th (28:21.96).
