NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb cross country teams have proved they are not only winning in races, but they are also winning in academics.
Freshman Juan Gonzalez was named to the All-Academic Men’s Cross Country Team by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Gonzalez, a Law and Justice major from Lake Forest, Calif., earned the honor by achieving a grade point average of 3.40 and taking home the All-Region honor at the NCAA South Regionals in November.
This year’s cross country season witnessed Gonzalez contributing to his team’s first ever A-Sun Cross Country Men’s Championship reign back in November, which was hosted by Lipscomb at Vaughn’s Gap Cross Country Course.
At the event, Gonzalez won Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year after finishing second in the 8K crossing the finish line in 25:05.70, the highest ever finish by any other Lipscomb runner in the event.
He was also named to the A-Sun All-Conference First Team and the A-Sun All Freshman Team.
In high school, Gonzalez was the 2012 CIF State Cross Country Champion. He also earned the automatic bid to compete at the NIKE Cross Nationals and took home the Orange County Register’s Athlete of the Year in cross country and track and field.
During his time on the cross country and track and field team in high school, Gonzalez posted personal best times of 4:09.79 in the 1600 meters, ranking him 32nd in the nation, and 8:54.01 in the 3200 meters, ranking him 12th in the nation.
While Gonzalez was forced to sit out of the indoor track and field season due to a knee injury, he looks forward to a swift return with hopes of continuing his successes as a member of the Lipscomb cross country and track and field teams.
Also picking up academic awards were both the men’s and women’s cross country teams, both being named National All-Academic Team honors.
To accomplish this feat, the team must collectively post a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater.
The men’s cross country team was one of 160 programs to capture the prestigious honor after all athletes on the team achieved a combined GPA of 3.54. The women’s cross country team was one among 217 programs to earn the honor with a combined GPA of 3.50.
The men’s team is the reigning A-Sun Cross Country Champions after sweeping the competition for their first A-Sun championship victory while the women picked up their third-straight championship win in the conference this past November.
Lipscomb’s cross country teams secured their spot on the list of 146 programs that had both their women’s and men’s teams earn the honor.
