Women's XC makes history with third-place regional ranking

NEW ORLEANS – The Lipscomb women’s cross country team continues to break ground this season ranking third in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association Division I South region poll released Monday.

"The women had a very good meet on Saturday,” said Bill Taylor, director of cross country. “We are definitely going in the right direction and having a lot of fun.

“Although rankings never matter, it is nice to get recognition, and I think the ranking is very accurate right now.”

The third-place ranking by the Lady Bisons marks the highest south region ranking in school history.

The women ranked fourth in week one after competing at the Vanderbilt Invite. The team dropped to fifth in week three after racing at the Battle in Beantown.

The Purple and Gold move in front of Alabama and Mississippi State in the poll ranking behind Florida State and Vanderbilt.

“We aren't at Vanderbilt and Florida State's level quite yet, but that is what we are striving for,” Taylor said. “We know we are in the mix though and we have been on a steady increase. The women have grown up a lot this season. I'm really proud of their effort and maturity.

“We have a lot of room for improvement too, which is really exciting. We just need to keep focusing on ourselves and the basic things we are working to get better at every week, and the results and rankings take care of themselves. It's exciting to be where we are right now. Our goals are bigger than this though.”

The men’s team dropped from eighth to 11th in the men’s south region poll.

The squads return to action Saturday Oct. 18 splitting competitions between Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Indiana and the Front Runner Invite in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
