Cross country earns top-five spots at Commodore Classic

NASHVILLE – For the second race in a row, the Lipscomb cross country squad came away with a pair of top-five finishes on a local course as the women finished fourth and the men finished fifth at the Commodore Classic.

The Lady Bisons grabbed fourth with a time of 1:27.58, just behind Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and the first place finisher, Michigan, and ahead of Ole Miss, Ohio State and Belmont in what was a stacked field.

Junior Barbara Lee Ball placed in the top ten, finishing eighth with a time of 17:15.5. Freshman Brooke Kingma finished in 19th with a mark of 17:31.7. Sophomore Paige Stoner (24th), Freshman Kelly Nesky (27th), senior Kate Bucknam (28th) and junior Sally Larson 29th) all placed inside the top thirty with times of 17:42.6, 17:43.8, 17:44.0, and 17:44.5 respectively.

The men’s team placed fifth with an overall time of 2:07.18, just behind Ohio State, Georgia Tech and winner Louisville. The Purple and Gold placed ahead of Tennessee, Ole Miss and hosts Vanderbilt among others.

Juniors Jacob Poyner (25:00.0) and Christian Freeman (25:03.0) finished back-to-back in ninth and tenth place.  Fellow junior Juan Gonzalez placed just behind in 16th at a 25:13.1 mark. Senior Daniel Gardner (25:59.1) and freshman Andrew Ayers (26:01.9) earned the 48th and 50th spots respectively.
