Cross country earns near sweep of ASUN preseason accolades

LAKEPOINT, Ga. – The Lipscomb cross country squad earned several Atlantic Sun Conference preseason accolades as announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.

Both the men’s and women’s teams were named the preseason conference champions after earning all eight first-place votes in the preseason coaches poll. Both squads finished ahead of second place North Florida in the standings.

The women’s team is heading into the fall campaign as the five-time defending ASUN champion, while the men’s has won three consecutive conference titles.

Rising senior Juan Gonzalez was unanimously voted the ASUN Preseason Runner of the Year. He has been named to the ASUN All-Conference First Team three years in a row, finishing in the top three at the ASUN Championships each year. Last season, he finished second overall with a school-record time of 24:44.28.

Seniors Christian Freeman and Jake Poyner are also returning All-Conference runners for the men’s team, while the women’s team will return six of their ASUN record-setting nine All-Conference members from 2015: Barbara Lee Ball (First), Brooke Kingma (First), Kelli Nesky (First), Sally Larson (Second), Katie Bianchini (Second), and Bridgette Doucet (Second).

The Lipscomb cross country squad will kick off its season on Sept. 3 at the Belmont Opener.
