Cross country to begin season at Belmont Opener

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb cross country squad is set to kick off its season on Saturday at the Belmont Opener.

The meet will be taking place at Vaughn’s Gap in Percy Warner Park, a course the Bisons are very familiar with.

“It’s going to be exciting to see where we’re at,” Lipscomb Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Bill Taylor said.

Lipscomb enters the season as the five-time defending Atlantic Sun champions on the women’s side and the three-time defending champion on the men’s, but the team lost several talented runners from last season, including two-time individual conference champion Madi Talbert.

“There are a lot more question marks than we’ve had the last couple of years, especially having lost Madi Talbert in particular on the women’s side,” Taylor said. “We also lost Daniel Gardner and Jared Wingerter, a couple of guys who have been staples for us in our top group.”

Despite the absence of those prominent runners, the Purple and Gold are still bringing back 10 All-Conference performers: seniors Sally Larson, Barbara Lee Ball, Christian Freeman, Juan Gonzalez, and Jacob Poyner, junior Katie Bianchini, and freshmen Kelli Nesky, Bridgette Doucett, Psalm Ocampo, and Robert Rupp.

“We’re not going to race all our top guys. For the women’s we’ll just unleash everybody,” Taylor said. “We’re just trying to get our identity for this year and get things started.”

The men’s race will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the women’s race at 10 a.m.
