Cross country to kick off season at Belmont Opener

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb cross country squad is set to begin its season on Saturday at the Belmont Opener on the Vaughn’s Creek Course at Percy Warner Park.

The women’s race is set to begin at 9 a.m., while the men will start at 9:30 a.m.

Among the schools entered in the competition will be host Belmont, fellow Nashville programs Vanderbilt, Trevecca, and Rhodes, the Ohio Valley Conference’s Austin Peay, and Evansville of the Missouri Valley Conference.

Last season at the Belmont Opener, Lipscomb grabbed a pair of second-place finishes as the women finished second behind nationally-ranked Vanderbilt, while the men placed behind host Belmont.

Lipscomb enters the season as the six-time defending women’s ASUN Champions, a program and conference record. On the men’s side, the Bisons have earned three of the last four ASUN titles. Both squads have qualified for the NCAA South Region Championships in each of the last three seasons.

The Bisons return seven All-Conference members from 2016: Courtney Brenner, Bridgette Doucet, Kacey Kemper, Avery Franklin, and Hannah Owens for the women and Kyle Johnson and William Kachman from the men.

2015 All-Conference performers Juan Gonzalez, Christian Freeman, and Jacob Poyner will also be back for the men after redshirting in 2016.
