The Lipscomb Bisons golf team continues to knock on the door in search of a first place finish.
The Bisons finished third in the 14-team field with a combined 863 in the three rounds of play in the UT-Martin Skyhawk Classic at Paris Landing State Park Golf Course in Buchanan, Tenn.
The Bisons came out strong in the first round ending in first with a 280 then fell to second after the second round of play and while improving play with a 292. In the third round the Bisons combined to shoot 291, but it wasn't enough to retain second place.
They finished two shots behind Murray State and John A. Logan Community College, who tied for first place in regulation. In the Murray State Invitational last week the Bisons finished one shot behind the winner.
“We were eight under in the first round and that was very strong,” Lipscomb coach Will Brewer said. “We are getting better. We still need to finish one out.”
Two Bisons finished in the top 10. Ryan Terry led the team throughout the tournament and finished in a tie for fifth place with a combined 212 (67-74-71). Blanton Farmer moved from 13th place at the start of the third round to a tie for seventh with a combined 217 (71-72-70). All of the players in the top 10 finished under par.
Also in competition were Paul Klein-Kracht in a tie for 26th with a 219 (69-75-75), Dustin Wilder in a tie for 36th with an overall score of 220 (74-71-75) and Alex Cox tied for 40th with a 224 (73-76-75).
“They believe that they can compete,” Brewer said. “It is a matter of shot here or a shot putt there to be where we need to be.
“From the first three rounds this fall to the last five rounds we have improved. But we still have a ways to go.”
The Bisons will hit the greens again Monday, Oct. 22, 2012 in the F&M Bank Austin Peay State University Intercollegiate.
