EDWARDSVILLE, ILL.- The Lipscomb men’s golf team closed strong in the final round of the Derek Dolenc Invitational and placed third in a 12-team field at Sunset Hills Country Club in Edwardsville, Ill.
Belmont left with the tournament crown after shooting two-over par 866 for the three rounds.
After shooting four-over par in the first round, the Bisons turned around and played the second round on a very hot and humid day and shot a combined 13-over.
“It was a very difficult situation Monday to walk 36-holes in the heat, “said coach Will Brewer. “Our scores reflected that by going up in the second round, as did everybody’s. We as a team are very conditioned but we will have to continue to work on that.”
On the final day of the invitational the Bisons found their swing again and posted a 292 six-over par.
“I thought we played fairly well, we recovered nicely,” Brewer said. “I was pleased, though we are never satisfied unless we win.”
For the tournament the Bisons scored an 883 (290,301,292).
Senior leader Dustin Wilder paced the Purple and Gold over the two days with a three-over 219. With each round Wilder lowered his scores, 74-73-72 and finished tied for 10th.
“As a team we are trying to improve, trying to learn and just get better,” Brewer said. “We learned some things this week. We will continue to grow and see who really wants to compete.”
Finishing just one stroke behind Wilder, Caston Roberts posted a 76 on Tuesday to place him in a tie for 12th.
Freshman Sydney Chung finished strong on Tuesday by shooting his lowest round of the tournament at one-over par 73. His 222 (74-75-73) was tied for 16th overall.
Tyler Leroy fired the lowest round of the day for the Bisons with a one-under par 71. Leroy turned his tournament around on Tuesday after finishing with 77-79 on Monday. His final round was low enough to increase his overall finish by 18 spots to a tie for 37th.
After scoring an even-par 72 in the first round, freshman Stoney Crouch struggled in the second and third rounds and shot 81-79 to finish 55th.
“As a group we are trying to find five or six players who will play every week for us,” said Brewer. “This tournament was more of a learning curve to see where we are more than anything.”
Low round of the tournament belonged to Mitchell Homb of SIU Edwardsville who shot a five-under par 67 in the opening round. He shot 70-72 over the last two rounds to finish first overall with a seven-under par 209.
The second- lowest round of the invitational was shot by Lipscomb freshman Mikey Feher with a 68 on Monday.
Feher ended the Derek Dolenc with the lowest overall score of all individuals at 219 (68-75-76).
“Mikey played well over the past two days, “said Brewer. “I took him more for experience and he had a great showing.”
The men’s golf team will hit the links again on Sept. 30 when they travel to Hopkinsville, Ky. to take part in the Murray State Invitational.
