JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Lipscomb Bisons golf team finished 15th in the Eagle/Osprey Intercollegiate to end its fall campaign.
Sydney Chung shot the low round of the day for Lipscomb with a 76 over the final 18 holes in the third round of the 54-hole tournament at the Deerwood Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.
“I am real proud of what we did this week,” Lipscomb Director of Golf Will Brewer said. “Even though our finish doesn’t show it, we didn’t play that bad this week.
“Everybody did a lot of good things well. We struck the ball well both days. I also thought our decision making was very good, but the one thing we didn’t do a great job at was putting. A couple of bad putts here and there put us behind the eight ball early on.”
All five Bisons played the three day tournament within four strokes of each other and were paced by Mikey Feher’s 231. Feher posted rounds of 75-78-78 to finish tied for 50th.
“Mikey’s leadership was good,” Brewer said. “What I like the most about Mikey is that he is an absolute tiger when it comes to competitiveness on the golf course. He has a strong will and a very strong mental capacity.”
Dowling Armstrong and Caston Roberts both tied for 59th with a 233 total. Armstrong shot 79 on Tuesday after shooting a pair of 77s in the first two rounds.
Roberts is coming off an injury that sidelined him for a month and a half and still managed to shoot the low round of the tournament for the Bisons with a 74 in the first round. He followed up the two-over par round with an 80 and 79.
“The scored doesn’t really dictate how Caston played,” Brewer said. “Coming off an injury you are going to be a little rusty, but I thought Caston played well and continued to get stronger each day. He was a couple bad holes from shooting a 72 today.”
Finishing in 65th, Paul Klein-Kracht stayed consistent firing 78 in all three rounds for a total of 234.
Before shooting the 76 on Tuesday, Chung posted 79-80 on Monday for a 235 total. He finished tied for 69th.
Vanderbilt who is ranked the No. 18 team in the nation, was crowned tournament champions after shooting a 12-over par 876 (292, 291, 293).
Logan McCracken of Tulsa won the medalist and was the only player in the field to finish under par. McCracken fired rounds of 72, 71 and 68 for a three round total of 211. He finished five strokes in front of second place.
“I am somewhat disappointed no one stepped up and took charge this week,” Brewer said. “Everyone was bunched together, and that is good because it shows just how competitive this bunch is. But we need to step up and get that much better.”
The Bisons wrapped up a successful fall campaign that saw them win the Murray State Invite along with having a third and fourth place finish.
“I think we are stronger top to bottom without question this year compared to last year,” Brewer said. “I am not necessarily pleased with how we finished in a couple of events, but the win was good for us. A lot of good things happened this fall, but no one is satisfied.”
