SOMIS, Calif. – The Lipscomb men’s golf team returns to the links on Monday when it travels west for the Jones Invitational.
The 54-hole event will be contested on the challenging par-72 and 6,985 yard Saticoy Country Club. Pepperdine University will be serving as the host school.
On Monday the invitational will get started with a 9:30 a.m. CT shotgun start and will play 36 holes. The third and final round will tee off on Tuesday at 10 a.m. CT.
The field consists of 12 teams, including four teams ranked in the top-50 in the nation.
Participants include: No. 23 University of Southern California, No. 30 Brigham Young, No. 48 Cal State Fullerton, No. 50 San Diego State, Pepperdine, Cal State Northridge, Georgia State, San Diego, San Jose State, UC Irvine and Washington State.
Bisons head coach and Director of Golf Will Brewer will take five golfers to Ventura County, including Gilbert, Ariz., native and former Pepperdine stick swinger, Caston Roberts. The junior played in 11 tournaments and 32 rounds over two years for the Waves. His stroke average while on the West Coast was 77.25.
Making the trip alongside Roberts will be four freshmen, Mikey Feher, Sydney Chung, Stoney Crouch and Dowling Armstrong.
The same five Bisons competed in Lipscomb’s initial tournament of the spring last week at the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas. Lipscomb finished in 10th after firing a total team score of 907 (+43).
Roberts and Armstrong paced the Bisons with a three round total of plus-7, 223. They finished tied for 18th.
Roberts carded rounds of 70-76-77.
Armstrong was consistent on both days finishing with 74-74-75.
Chung finished 41st, Crouch was 45th and Feher placed 80th.
The Jones Invitational will be the first time since 2007 that Pepperdine has hosted a tournament at Saticoy Country Club and the 10th overall.
Saticoy was named the 35th-best course in California by Golf Digest in 2013. The Bison players will be paired with golfers from Georgia State and San Diego State.
