Crouch's top 20 finish leads men's golf at Jones Invite

SOMIS, Calif. - Freshman Stoney Crouch turned in a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday to finish at 10-over-par for the Jones Invitational at Saticoy Country Club, earning his first career Top 20 finish.

Lipscomb finished the weekend at 70-over-par 934, for 11th overall. No. 50 San Diego State claimed the tournament title over No. 23 Southern California, shooting 17-over-par for the three day tournament.

“I was very pleased with our overall play this week,” Lipscomb coach and Director of Golf Will Brewer said. “This team we brought to Malibu is very young and somewhat inexperienced. Saticoy is a very difficult and challenging golf course, especially when we haven’t gotten as many reps as we would have liked at this point in the spring.

“But all in all, today marked a day that was very positive for us as a program. We made much better decisions and played within ourselves.”

Crouch climbed 19 spots in the third round after sinking four birdies to close the invitational tied for 19th, the highest finish of his career. Crouch fired 77-78 in the first two rounds Monday.

“We worked on a couple things with Stoney and he felt more confident this week,” Brewer said. “And it really showed in his game.”

Like Crouch, freshman Sydney Chung also fired a 1-under-par 71 in the final round. He improved with each round after opening with an 81-78 on Monday. Chung’s 230 total placed him in 31st.

"Even though Saticoy was a much more difficult course, I did see improvements,” Brewer said. “Stoney and Sydney played really well this week and especially today. They made a lot of good swing s and played with more confidence.”

Dowling Armstrong fired a 77-83 Monday and was on his way to a low score Tuesday before carding bogeys on four-straight holes on the back nine to close the tournament with a 79. He finished tied for 52nd.

Rounding out the Purple and Gold from the Saticoy Country Club was junior Caston Roberts and freshman Mikey Feher. They finished tied for 63rd overall.

Roberts shot rounds of 86-79-82 while Feher turned in rounds of 78-83-86.

The Bisons will travel to Jackson, Tenn. for the Grover Page Classic on March 10-11. Brewer believe playing one of the most difficult tracks in southern California will help prepare his team for the rest of the spring.

“This should help us prepare for Jackson Country Club in a couple weeks,” said Brewer. “But the hole is the same size on every golf course and we still have to find the bottom of the cup. It will be an easier layout. We should be able to compete for the championship and I hope they expect to win there because we are improving with each week.

“This team is beginning to believe that we can be competitive with better teams. I am hoping this is a springboard that will propel us through the rest of the spring season and into the conference championship.”
