Armstrong leads, men's golf in third at Liberty Invite

AMHERST, Va. – Behind a -7, 137 from freshman Dawson Armstrong, the Lipscomb men’s golf day finished the first day of the 2015 Liberty Spring invitational in third place.

Armstrong opened the day with a 69 at the Poplar Grove Golf Course before carding a 68 in the final 18  holes of the day to stand tied atop the leaderboard with North Carolina’s William Register, who is ranked among the top 100 collegiate golfers in the country.  The newcomer started off with six birdies in the first round ahead of the second round where he birdied four holes and did not bogey a single hole.

Sophomore Stoney Crouch also finished the day below par with a -2, 142 (73-69) to sit in a tie for eighth.  Freshman Eric Ansett completed the day tied for 30th at +2 behind a 146 (74-72). Senior Tyler Leroy finished three strokes behind Ansett with a +5, 149 (76-73).

Fellow senior Caston Roberts rounded out the competitors for the Bisons with a +15, 159 (80-79).

The Bisons trail only No. 19 North Carolina and No. 20 Oklahoma in the 54-hole event.  The Sooners sit atop the field at -14 after rounds of 283 and 279.  Lipscomb sits 12 strokes back of the lead after rounds of 292 and 282.  The Purple and Gold are just seven behind the Tar Heels for second place.

Saturday’s final round gets underway at 7 a.m.
