CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After opening the 2015 NCAA Chapel Hill regional with an even-par, 72, Lipscomb men’s golfer Dawson Armstrong carded another even-par effort on Friday in the second round at the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill.
Starting the day on the back nine, the freshman opened the day with 11-straight pars before notching his first birdie of the day on hole No. 3, a par-5. Armstrong then double bogied the fourth hole ahead of the final birdie of the afternoon on hole No. 6 to draw back even.
“Today was frustrating,” said Armstrong. “I hit the ball better from tee to green but I didn’t hit that many great shots and give myself enough chances for birdie. If I had had a putt or two roll in at the beginning of the round it could have been a completely different day.”
With a two-round score of 144, the Brentwood native sits in a 10-way tie for 22nd and is eight strokes back of Western Carolina’s J.T. Poston, who has fired back-to-back 68’s to take over the top of the leaderboard.
“Dawson is really close in all areas of the game,” said Lipscomb head men’s golf coach Will Brewer. “Golf is a funny game. Some days it jumps one way and goes in your favor and some days it doesn’t. The last two have definitely not gone in his favor.”
No. 11 Stanford leads the way in the team race with a -11, 565 (290-275) just one stroke ahead of Charlotte.
“If Dawson had a couple of putts to go in in either round, he could easily be four or five under and be right in the hunt,” said Brewer. “That hasn’t happened yet but we’re hopeful for a special day tomorrow. He needs to perform better on the birdiable holes. Hopefully, he will get on a roll early and can play off of that. “
Armstrong will tee off for the final round of the 54-hole event on Saturday morning at 8:42.
