NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s golf team finished the first day of action at the 2014 Pinetree Intercollegiate in seventh place after rounds of 298 and 299 to put the Bisons at +21 after 36 holes.
“We didn’t have our best day today,” said Lipscomb head golf coach Will Brewer. “We’re not out of it though. We are only four shots out of fourth and six shots out of third. If we can have a good round tomorrow, we can get right back in the hunt with the top teams.”
The Purple and Gold were led on Monday by senior Caston Roberts and freshman Dawson Armstrong, who are both tied for 18th after the first day of action. Roberts opened the day with a +1, 73 before closing the day with a 4-over 76 for a 149.
Dawson Armstrong, the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Golfer of the Week, started the day with a +2, 74 and then finished the final 18 holes with a +3, 75.
Sophomore Stoney Crouch finished right on the heels of Roberts and Dawson Armstrong with a +6, 150 (78, 72) in a tie for 21st. Fellow classmate Mikey Fehr also finished in the top 30 in a tie for 29th shooting a +8, 152 (73, 79).
Sophomore Dowling Armstrong rounded out the scoring competitors for the Bisons with a +15, 159 (83, 76) in 51st place.
“The course was very challenging today but we played better on the last nine holes,” said Brewer. “The greens were PGA tour speed but we should do better tomorrow.”
Host Kennesaw State blitzed the field on their home course at the Pinetree Country Club. The Owls set a Pinetree Intercollegiate record with a -12, 276 in the first 18 holes of the day and then followed up with a 7-under 281 to lead the field with a -19, 557.
The Bisons head into the final day with only six shots separating third through seventh places in the tournament.
The event concludes on Tuesday with the final 18 holes of action in the Peach State.
