Men's golf opens Grove in third with Armstrong leading

COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – On the heels of a blistering final low round at the Pinetree Intercollegiate, Lipscomb freshman Dawson Armstrong opened the Grove Intercollegiate on top of the leaderboard and helped lead the men’s golf team to a tie for third after the first day of action.

The newcomer sank a pair of eagles on the afternoon en route to a 6-under, 66 staking claim to a two-shot lead after the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament.

“I think we did okay today,” said Lipscomb head men’s golf coach Will Brewer.  “You never know how you are going to play at home and focus when you are used to playing on the road.  Things are a little more casual and things are a little more relaxed because you’re at home.”

Senior Caston Roberts rallied from a slow start on the front nine by shooting a 32 on the back nine to finish the day with a +1, 73 that ties him for 20th.  Sophomores Stoney Crouch and Dowling Armstrong followed behind Roberts in the standings.

Crouch finished the day with a +3, 75 in a tie for 36th just one stroke ahead of Dowling Armstrong, who is tied for 47th after carding a +4, 76.  Mikey Feher rounded out the team with a +9, 81 in 68th.

The Bisons combined for a +2, 290 to tie Mississippi State and sit one stroke behind Southern Miss in second.  Troy led the field after the first 18 holes at the Grove Club with a -9, 279.

“I am somewhat pleased with our effort but we have to play better the next two days to compete for the championship,” said Brewer”.  “It’s going to be a little windier the next two days so we need to play well to have a chance.”

“We’re still primed to do well.  We just have to make some putts and we’ll be in good shape.”

Action continues in the 3-day event on Monday with Lipscomb taking the course at 9 a.m.  Fans are invited to come out and cheer on the Bisons. Live scoring for the event is available at:
