Freshmen lead men's golf surge to 8th-place finish

VALENCIA, Calif. – Behind a final-round 290, the Lipscomb men’s golf team roared to an eighth-place finish on Tuesday in the 2015 Jones Invitational hosted by Pepperdine.

“We had a good finish,” said Lipscomb head coach Will Brewer. “The last two rounds were excellent, especially today’s round where we were the second lowest. The only team that scored better than us was the eventual winner.”

Starting the day in 12th place, the Bisons rallied up the leaderboard behind a -3, 69 from freshman Eric Ansett and a -1, 71 from fellow rookie Dawson Armstrong.  Ansett would finish the event in a tie for 15th behind a +2, 218 (73-76-69). While Armstrong finished tied for sixth with a -1, 215 (74, 70, 71).

Sophomore Stoney Crouch carded a +1, 73 on the final day of action at the Valencia Country Club to finish tied for 35th.  Crouch fired a 224 (81-70-72) in the 54-hole event.

Seniors Caston Roberts and Tyler Leroy finished tied for 72nd and 76th, respectively behind scores of +19 (76-75-84) and +23 (84-78-77).

Southern California finished atop the leaderboard with a -14 (277-288-285) effort that was 16 strokes ahead of second-place Kennesaw State.  Zach Seabolt from Winthrop and Sean Crocker from USC finished atop the individual ranks at -8.  Seabolt claimed medalist honors winning a two-hole playoff.

“There were 10 or 11 teams in the top 100 in this event, so this finish should help our ranking and that’s what we are all about,” said Brewer. “We’re trying to get better every day, improve and excel when we are given the opportunity to.”

The Bisons return to action March 8-10 competing in the Samford Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Alabama.
