Rain washes out final 18 holes for men's golf at Samford

HOOVER, Ala. – Mother Nature won the day on the final 18 holes of competition in the 2015 Samford Intercollegiate as the Lipscomb men’s golf team earned a second-place finish with the final round being canceled on Tuesday.

“This was a bit of a disappointing week,” said Lipscomb men’s golf head coach Will Brewer. “We haven’t had a lot of time to prepare but there are no excuses.  We just didn’t have our ‘A’ game.

“We were playing well today when they called the tournament off.   I don’t know if we could have caught Southern Miss but Stoney (Crouch) had a four under through 10 holes.   Everyone else was hovering around par so we might have had a chance to catch up a little bit but I’m not sure how much.”

Southern Miss claimed the tournament crown after firing a -1, 575 (289-286) on Monday as Casey Fernandez and Hayes Weathersby both shot a -2, 142. Fernandez and Weathersby played a playoff hole on Wednesday despite the weather conditions to determine medalist honors with Weathersby taking home top laurels.

Lipscomb senior Caston Roberts finished tied for fifth (+2, 146), while sophomore Stoney Crouch tied for ninth (+3, 147).

“We’re still growing and learning to try and get better and improve,” said Brewer. “We still have a ways to go before we get where we want to get to qualify for the NCAA postseason.”

The Bisons return to action March 15-16 in the Southern Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.
